The International Forum on Comprehensive Utilization of Bauxite Residue is an international conference jointly organized by the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association (CNIA) and the International Aluminium Institute (IAI), with support from the Aluminum Corporation of China (CHINALCO) and Rio Tinto Group (RT). The forum focuses on industry priorities including Bauxite Residue source reduction, pre-treatment, green utilization, and ecological restoration, aiming to promote large-scale global application of Bauxite Residue.”

Tao Jiang
Current situation and new progress of red mud utilization.
Full Professor in the School of Minerals Processing and Bioengineering at Central South University, China. Dr. Jiang has long been engaged in the research of minerals processing and extraction metallurgy. He won 3 China's State Science and Technology Awards and 8 first-class awards at the provincial and ministerial levels.He published 8 monographs and 370 papers and holds more than 90 Chinese patents. He also organized 12 international academic conferences and edited 9 international symposium proceedings.

Mr. Dong Jianxiong is currently the Vice President of Aluminum Corporation of China, the Chairman Aluminum Corporation of China Limited,Vice-Chairman of 6th Council of China Mining Association, Vice Chairman of 3rd Council of All-China Environment Federation and Vice Chairman of Mineral Resources and Material Application Innovation Platform of China. Mr. Dong is accredited as Professorate Senior Engineer specializing in Non-Ferrous Metallurgy who started his career in 1990. Before he took his current position, Mr. Dong assumed multiple leadership roles across Chinalco entities including the Vice President of Baotou Aluminum, Executive Director of China Great Wall Aluminum, President of Chalco Henan, Chairman of China Mining Limited and Chairman of Guangxi Huasheng New Materials.
Sebastien Fortin
A holistic approach to reduce bauxite residue stockpiling
Sébastien Fortin earned a chemistry degree in 1996 and a Ph.D. in coordination chemistry in 2001 from Université de Montréal and joined the Alcan research centre (ARDC) as a post-doctoral research fellow at the end of 2000. He has worked for the company ever since, holding technical and management roles in the R&D division, including 2 years in France, in addition to a 3-year secondment as process chemist at the QAL refinery in Australia. Sébastien is currently R&D Principal Advisor for Bauxite and Alumina, in the Strategy and Innovation team of Rio Tinto’s Arvida R&D Centre in Saguenay, Canada. He also actively represents Rio Tinto on the International Aluminium Institute’s Bauxite and Alumina Committee since 2018, taking part in various international projects and workgroups. He has been promoted as a RioExpert, as part of the RioExcel programme in 2021, as an acknowledgement of his experience, expertise and achievements in the fields of bauxite, Bayer process chemistry and bauxite residue valorization.

Jianqing Pi
Research and practice of the comprehensive utilization technology of red mud
He has been engaged in alumina production, technology and management for 39 years, and has worked in the alumina enterprises of Aluminum Corporation of China (Aluminum Corporation of China) and Nanshan Group. Currently, he is the Chief Engineer of Sanmenxia Aluminum Industry. Additionally, he serves as an off-campus supervisor for master's students at Central South University and Northeastern University.
Raphael Costa
WAVE (metal extraction from microwave processing)
Raphael is the technology director for the Bauxite & Alumina business unit of Norsk Hydro. He is responsible for technology selection and development, the R&D group portfolio and the technical support to operations, including the bauxite mining and beneficiation operations at Paragominas, and the alumina refining operations at Alunorte. He is a member of the board of the CAP alumina refinery project and is also a member of the board of the Paragominas mine. Raphael has 35 years of experience in the aluminium industry, working in various technical and managerial positions with Alcoa and Hydro, in Brazil, US, Spain and Australia. He also has 4 years of experience in the steel mini-mill industry in the US, working with the steelmaking company Gerdau. He has a Chemical Engineering degree from the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in Brazil and a degree of master’s in business administration (MBA) from the University of Houston-Victoria, in the US
Gang Wang
Application of red mud in green building materials
He has long been engaged in national research projects in the building materials industry, national and local building materials industry planning, engineering design and consulting, enterprise management consulting, soft science project research, and other business work. He has led or participated in multiple important research projects and engineering consulting projects such as national, regional, and large and medium-sized enterprise group building materials industry development planning (strategy), Many of these projects have won the Excellent Engineering Consulting Achievement Award in the Building Materials Industry (ministerial level). In recent years, there has been in-depth research in the upstream and downstream of the cement and gravel industry chain, low-carbon development of building materials, comprehensive utilization of solid waste resources, prefabricated buildings, building energy conservation, and other fields.

Research and Engineering Application of Value-added Resource Utilization of Red Mud at Large Scale
He has long been committed to the research on the synergistic scale low-carbon value-added resource transformation of bulk solid wastes, such as red mud/manganese slag and garbage incinerator slag, and has developed a series of green and low-carbon products, such as red mud-based concrete and products, red mud-based lightweight soil, and red mud-based stabilized materials, which are applied in large-scale projects.

Ms. Qi Lijuan, holds the titles of doctor and senior engineer and is deputy general manager of Chalco Zhengzhou Nonferrous Metals Research Institute Limited. She has long been involved in the research and development of new technologies for the aluminum industry, including new technologies for green and low-carbon production of alumina and efficient use of bauxite. She has participated in over 40 major research and development projects; She has published over 30 papers and authorized 24 invention patents.

Dr. Cheng Yu holds the positions of professor and doctoral supervisor at Shandong University of Science and Technology and is recognized as a national industrial leader. His primary focus lies in the scientific research and industrialization of red mud ecological engineering utilization. Over the recent years, Dr. Cheng Yu has led his team to achieve a series of groundbreaking achievements, offering a dependable solution to the challenges associated with red mud resource utilization.
Tobias Hertel
Vitrified bauxite residue – a reactive supplementary cementitious material.
Tobias is as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Materials Engineering at KU Leuven (the University of Leuven in Belgium). He has earned his Master of Science degree in applied mineralogy with focus on cement chemistry from the University of Erlangen in Germany. His doctoral degree, obtained from KU Leuven, concentrated on the transformation of bauxite residue into construction materials through the development of novel processes. Currently, Tobias is actively providing guidance to multiple Ph.D. candidates and managing projects within the field of bauxite residue research, funded both from industry and European programmes. His specific emphasis lies in the development of cementitious binders and monolithic construction materials derived from residue, encompassing not only laboratory work but also initiatives at pilot scale. Tobias's general interests revolve around advancing the decarbonisation of the construction industry. This involves various aspects, such as the effective use of waste materials as raw materials to produce novel supplementary cementitious materials and cements, alternative processing technologies, as well as carbonation.
Xiaolin Pan
New technology for deep dealkalization and synchronous recovery of alumina from red mud
Xiaolin Pan is a professor and doctoral supervisor at Northeastern University, and executive deputy director of the Key Laboratory for Nonferrous Metal Resource Recycling (Shenyang). His primary research focuses on the theory of alumina production and the ecological utilization of aluminum-bearing resources. He undertook over 20 national and ministry projects, and over 40 enterprise cooperation projects; published over 120 papers, including over 40 SCI papers and over 30 EI papers as first or corresponding authors; applied for over 50 invention patents; published two national planned textbooks; gained 6 ministry level science and technology awards.
Cheng Peng
Metallurgy and urban solid waste resource solutions under the background of double carbon.
He has long been engaged in the construction of large-scale iron and steel metallurgy projects. Operation, energy saving and environmental protection work, the research results of rotary hearth furnace are widely used throughout the country, and have won a number of industry-level awards such as metallurgical science and technology progress awards for many times. He is also a member of the industry association, an expert, and an honorary researcher of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Yilin Wang
Critical minerals separation from bauxite and the value-added utilization of bauxite residue.
He currently holds the position of associate professor and serves as a doctoral supervisor at Central South University. His primary research focuses on clean alumina metallurgy and the comprehensive utilization of red mud. Over the past five years, Wang has made significant contributions to the field, publishing 23 papers as the first/corresponding author in well-regarded domestic and international journals, including Mineral Engineering and Journal of Cleaner Production. Additionally, he has successfully led five national and provincial level projects.
Xiaoming Liu
The synergistic utilization of all components of red mud:magnetization reduction iron extraction and materialization.
His research focuses on the reuse of solid wastes, new ecological building materials. Specifically, his study includes the preparation of ecological building materials and high value-added materials by using red mud, coal gangue, steel slag, tailings, fly ash, blast furnace slag, electrolytic manganese slag and other industrial solid wastes. He has been responsible for or participate in more than 30 government research projects, and completed more than 20 enterprise projects as the PI. He has published more than 130 papers in Journal of Hazardous Materials, Journal of Cleaner Production, Chemical Engineering Journal, etc. Additionally, He has applied over 40 Chinese national invention patents and 30 of them have been authorized.
Zhaofeng Li
Theory and Key Technologies for the Preparation of Green and High Value Civil Functional Materials by Red Mud Collaborative Multisource Solid Waste.

Yanjun Liu
Study on the Properties of Redmud-based Structural Lightweight Aggregate Concrete
Yanjun LIU obtained his bachelor degree in building materials at University of Shenyang Architecture and Civil Engineering, earned his master’s degree in materials science and engineering at China Building Materials Academy, and achieved his PhD in civil engineering at University of Florida, USA. He is registered professional engineer (PE) in USA, selected member of American Society of Civil Engineers (M.ASCE), LEED Accredidated Professional (LEED AP) and registered Professor-level professional engineer in China. Currently, he is working as Principal Expert of Low Carbon Concrete Institute of Beijing Building Materials Academy. His career focus is on the research and development of Innovative low-carbon cement clinker, Industrial Solid wastes for Lightweight Aggregate, lightweight aggregate concrete, ready-mixed concrete, UHPC, energy efficient building materials and green building so on.
Lin Guo
Soil formation and in-situ ecological rehabilitation on bauxite residue disposal areas.
His research interests include: investigation, assessment, prevention and restoration of groundwater pollution, harmless treatment and ecological restoration of red mud, development and utilization of underground space and strategic research on groundwater environment.
Efthymios Balomenos
Strategic approach (case study) for a plant faced with ceasing to dump at sea.
Thymis studied Mining and Metallurgical engineering at the National Technical University of Athens and received his PhD degree in Thermodynamics in the same school in 2006. Since 2008 he has been working in the Laboratory of Metallurgy as a postdoctoral researcher focusing on sustainable process development, CO2 mitigation strategies, energy analysis and resource utilization efficiency. He is involved in the research management and coordination of several collaborative large scale research projects (ENEXAL, EURARE, SCALE, ENSUREAL, RemovAl, BIORECOVER, AlSiCaL, SISAL PILOT, HARARE, ReActiv) most of which focus on Bauxite Residue valorisation or alumina production. He has more than 80 research publications in journals and conference proceeding with more than 1,000 citations and an h-index of 19. Since 2015, he cooperates with MYTILINEOS - Metals as a senior consultant in R&D projects. He was a recipient of the TMS Light Metals Subject Award – Alumina & Bauxite in 2017 and since 2022 he is on the ICSOBA’s board of directors.
Santanu Dey
Fostering Circular Economy through Bauxite Residue Utilization.
His leadership extends to serving as the Water Taskforce Head, with the goal of making the Belagavi Alumina Refinery Water Positive by 2030. As a Certified Business Continuity Management (BCM) Specialist, he spearheads the Business Continuity Management Plan (BCMP) for the refinery.
